7 ZIP - The Best Free Compression utility Print E-mail

Like the WinZip, the entirely free 7-Zip unpacks a host of archive formats, including ZIP, TAR, and GZ, as well as its own 7z format. Also, unlike WinZip, it can create TAR and GZ archives, which are commonly used on Unix and Linux systems.

7z archives were up to 40% smaller then their ZIP equivalents, though compression took longer. Advanced options include the ability to create solid and self-extracting archives and to adjust the compression level. There's also a command-line module. Though the main interface is not quite as polished as WinZip's, it is convenient, letting you archive files via the context menu or by dragging and dropping. 7-Zip is fine for casual users with a bit of computer savvy, but it's especially well-suited to developers and anyone else who moves between the Windows and Linux/Unix worlds.
