10 Useful Tips for Troubleshooting PC Problems Print E-mail
Written by Administrator

New to PC support? Here's 10 tips and tricks everyone needs when they get started helping end users.

1: The Problem Is Often the User Himself!

Many of the in-home service calls I go on end up being training sessions rather than repair jobs. That's because beginners often have problems because of their inexperience and immediately jump to the conclusion that the computer is "broken." Here are a few of the most common ones, which I generally handle over the phone during the initial consultation rather than making a trip out to the site:

"The taskbar is gone." The user has accidentally resized the taskbar so small that it's just a thin bar across the bottom of the screen. I explain how to resize it.

"My program is gone." The user has deleted a shortcut from the desktop, and doesn't realize that he can start the program using the Start menu. Alternatively, the user has accidentally deleted the program's shortcut from the Start menu. I walk the user through recreating the shortcut.

"My documents are gone." The user is in an application program, such as Word, and has always stored his files in the My Documents folder. Someone has changed the file location that appears in the Open dialog box, and the user doesn't know how to change folders. I give the user a quick tutorial on file and folder locations.

"I can't find the files I unzipped." The user has used WinZip or some other unzip utility to extract files from an archive, but didn't pay attention to the folder name where the files would be extracted. I either have them unzip again, and this type note the location, or use the Search (or Find) command to locate the files if their names are known.

Written by Administrator
Monday, 21 November 2005

VoIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. If you've never heard of VoIP, get ready to change the way you think about long-distance phone calls. What VoIP does is, it converts the voice signal from your telephone into a digital signal that travels over the Internet. This means NO phone charges! And this is why VoIP is such a buzz word today.

So at the end of this article, you can speak to any person in the world without spending any Paisa, if both of them have VOIP enabled in their PCs.. VoIP can turn a standard Internet connection into a way to place free phone calls. The practical upshot of this is that by using some of the free VoIP software that is available to make Internet phone calls, you are bypassing the phone company (and its charges) entirely.

10 Tips to Choose & Protect your Password Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Monday, 14 November 2005

Despite the current wave of identity theft and corporate security breaches it's amazing how very few people treat their passwords with any level of seriousness. Most computers users, both at home and in the office, see passwords as a nuisance and therefore make them as easy to remember as possible. This can be a catastrophic mistake.

There are certain specific guidelines you need to follow to choose a safe and secure password. Use the following tips as a "how to" on making your password secure.

1. Your password must be alphanumeric. That simply means a mixture of numbers and letters such as xpf2778z. Why? When a hacker tries to break into a system they often use what are called dictionary or brute force hacks. A dictionary hack is an application that simply uses standard words and word combinations in an attempt to guess your password. For example many computer users use the word "password" as their actual password. A dictionary hack would crack that password in a few moments. Using alphanumeric passwords increases the number of possible password combinations by millions.

How to Trace the origin of an EMAIL Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Monday, 14 November 2005

Here I discuss, how to trace an email sender from the email header. I take my MSN account as an example. In some cases, you may want to know the origin of some e-mails:

-> When you are suspicious with a particular e-mail.

-> When a friend asks you about an e-mail you never send. There are two possible explanations: (1) your computer has been hijacked by nasty viruses/worms and sent out e-mails without your knowing; (2) somebody else uses your e-mail address for the e-mails he/she sent. Whatever the case is, you want to know the truth.

-> Someone contacts you for a job offer, and before you want to proceed any further, you may need to know more about this guy.

This short tutorial explains the basic of the e-mail system work and how to this knowledge to trace e-mails. Tracing an e-mail is not as hard as you might think. Let's begin to see how it works.
