I am Venkat Kudallur, development lead for Networking in Internet Explorer. We have made several improvements in Internet Explorer in Networking, and in this post, I would like to introduce you to some of the improvements in content caching and decompression in IE, two features that play a key role in speeding up the delivery of pages from a remote web server.
The team started just 6 months ago and has just the right mix of fresh engineering graduates full of zeal, people with prior experience and some old time Microsoft veterans. The focus for the IDC team is making IE great for IT professionals. |

IBM said Tuesday that it has begun production of the microprocessors that will serve as the brain of Microsoft Corp.'s next-generation video game and digital entertainment console, the Xbox 360.
Due to arrive in consumers' hands in late November when the Xbox 360 is planned to debut, IBM said that the chips offer dual-source processing capability and feature a wide range of specialized technology developed in tandem with Microsoft. The processors are being built at both the company's East Fishkill, N.Y. fabrication facility and by contractor Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing in Singapore.
Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft is betting on the Xbox 360, which will retail starting at $299, to help fuel its push into the digital living room. While its current Xbox console is focused purely on games and online multiplayer capabilities, the Xbox 360 will offer a range of entertainment applications, including the ability to download music and television programming, and exterior ports for interfacing with portable media devices such as rival Apple Inc.'s iPod and Sony Corp.'s PSP.

Why OpenOffice.org 2.0 Is Your Best Choice |

There are many fancy reasons that OpenOffice.org is a great choice for your office work. For example, it's open source and it supports an open format document standard, OpenDocument. I've been running a late beta of OpenOffice.org 2.0 on both my SuSE 9.3 a 10 Linux boxes and on Windo
I've started writing with vi on Unix and WordStar on CP/M. Over the years, I've used Lotus Word, WordPerfect and, yes, every version of Microsoft Word for Windows from 2.0 to 2003. Along the way, I've also used spreadsheets starting with VisiCalc, with many years spent on Lotus 1-2-3 and Quattro Pro and for the last five years, Microsoft Excel.

IBM Adds Security for ATMs With Encryption Facility for z/OS |

Sunday, 30 October 2005 |
IBM announced the availability of encryption software and plans for enhanced encryption security for Automatic Teller Machines.
Encryption Facility for z/OS version 1.1 supports encryption and decryption of certain file formats on z/OS, the IBM mainframe's flagship operating system. The company announced the feature's availability Friday.
It leverages the centralized key management capabilities provided by functions of z/OS and features of the IBM System z9 mainframe and zSeries to encrypt data stored on external taps and disk arrays. That will allow companies to share data without compromising it.
Encryption Facility for z/OS runs on all currently supported versions of z/OS. It includes Encryption Services Feature for Tape Transfer, which allows partners to remotely decode encrypted data stored on mainframe tapes. The tape transfer encryption software can run on 64-bit zSeries or System z9 mainframes with z/OS and zOS,e releases from 1.4 to 1.7. IBM offers a Java-based program to allow partners lacking z/OS on their mainframes to decrypt and receive as well as encrypt and send data. Those features are immediately available.

Unisys explores Intel path for mainframes |
|

Sunday, 30 October 2005 |
A deal announced yesterday between Unisys Corp. and NEC Corp. to produce high-end servers may lead to a migration from the mainframe ClearPath CMOS processor to Intel-based chips.
Road maps won't be finalized until the agreement with NEC is completed in the first quarter of 2006, and any migration away from CMOS will depend on Intel Corp.'s ability to provide a processor that delivers performance at least as good as the CMOS chip, said Guy Esnouf, a spokesman for Blue Bell, Pa.-based Unisys.
"Obviously, we're not going to do anything until we're happy the Intel processor technology is where it needs to be," said Esnouf. "We foresee a time when customers will be able to make that switch without any degradation of performance. In time, we would plan that ClearPath would run on Intel rather than on the current CMOS. But we're not going there now." |

Windows Vista Build 5231: More Changes |
|

Sunday, 30 October 2005 |
Review) - Microsoft is right on schedule with this month?s Windows Vista CTP (Community Technology Preview). We had to really pull some strings to get this release slightly ahead of schedule, but we managed it and it?s our pleasure to bring you our initial analysis of the new build, titled 5231. We?ll publish a follow-up piece once we?ve had the chance to analyze it in greater detail.
Interface: Nothing much has changed since the 5129 build, as the UI appears to be more or less set in pattern, though we do hope that Microsoft makes the color scheme a bit more cheery than a hybrid of translucent colors. |
