RFID to track bottled gas in India
Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), a Fortune 500 company that refines and markets petroleum products in India, will use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to track liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from plant to consumer. The $2.2 million project with IBM will center on HPCL's plant in Nashik.

Study finds midsize companies face difficult changes
A new report from IBM finds that midsize companies face significant challenges with change, and they report a sizable gap between their need for change and their past success in managing it. Titled 'The Enterprise of the Future', the study also shows that midsize companies are optimistic about growth opportunities, especially in developing economies, and are rapidly adapting their business models to become more competitive.

IBM researchers have linked Lotus Sametime, an instant messaging program, with several virtual environments. Called "Sametime 3-D," the project showcases what virtual environments can bring to the future of unified business communications.

Solid-state drive sets speed record
Engineers and researchers at the IBM Hursley development lab in England and Almaden Research Center in California have set a record in storage speed, outperforming the current rate by more than 250 percent. By combining Flash solid-state technology and IBM's storage virtualization technology, the researchers were able to transfer data at more than 1 million Input/Output (I/O) per second.

Fans get more bounce at 2008 US Open
Tennis fans are closer to the action than ever at the US Open, thanks to new features at the USOpen.org site. Interactive Draw, for example, allows fans to track a favorite player through the draw and to switch to a specific match in real time with point-by-point scoring. Other features "push" scores and other news to mobile devices or send text alerts for breaking news.

R&D journal focuses on storage of electronic 'stuff'
The electronic storage of data continues to grow exponentially. But as the late George Carlin pointed out, having a lot of "stuff" brings its own set of challenges. The latest issue of the IBM Journal of Research and Development, now available online, focuses on hardware and software approaches that help keep these repositories reliable and scalable, as well as ways to manage storage and the energy needed to drive it.

Canada to host top-20 supercomputer
The University of Toronto’s SciNet Consortium and IBM say they’ll build Canada’s most powerful and energy-efficient supercomputer. The machine is expected to be among the top 20 fastest supercomputers in the world -- 30 times faster than Canada’s current largest research system. It will be largest supercomputer outside the United States.

Despite benefits, people management gets short shrift
A study by IBM and the Human Capital Institute (HCI) found that although businesses know that good management boosts results, less than half of those surveyed say managers devote sufficient time to people management.
